Samui Hin Ta Hin Yai Rock Formation

X-Rated: Hin Ta Hin Yai Rock Formation
Lamai Beach’s Hin Ta (Grandfather Rock) and Hin Yai (Grandmother Rock) always manage to provoke a chuckle to first time visitors, as these natural formations bear an uncanny resemblance to male and female genetalia to all but the most conservative or obtuse. If it were one or the other by itself, it may just be chalked up to coincidence and man’s tendency for personification. But their close proximity to each other has inspired some fantastic theories.
According to legend, an old couple were shipwrecked in the bay, then died and their bodies washed ashore creating the rocks, while another version posits that they were doomed young lovers. In any case, the monument is one of the most visited on Samui, and a golden opportunity to take photos, just to hear friends say “Hmmm, that looks like a…no, it couldn’t be! Is it?” followed by a smattering of giggles and requisite bawdy jokes.

Hin Ta Hin Yai is located on the southern edge of Lamai Beach.
